Jaunt is the region’s award-winning public transit system, connecting the residents of Albemarle, Buckingham, Charlottesville, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson to all of central Virginia. We deliver convenient and reliable service with our demand-response and commuter routes, all through the use of current technology and a customer-focused approach. Jaunt is a public service corporation owned the local governments we serve and operating with financial assistance from community partnerships, federal and state transit grants, and local government funding support.
Our customers know us for our convenient and reliable service, and our customer-first attitude. Utilizing the latest technology, we offer curb-to-curb demand-response service, commuter fixed-route service, and ADA paratransit service. With our flexible service and affordable fares (in fact, right now we’re fare-free!) Jaunt can take you to work, medical appointments, shopping trips, school, and just about every stop in-between. We typically travel over two million miles per year!

History
1975
JAUNT (Jefferson Area United Transportation) established as a transit service for human service agencies.
1983
Jaunt, Inc. formed as a publicly held corporation owned by local governments; acronym goes away.
1989
Jaunt gets its own radio frequency for bus-to-base communication.
1990
Jaunt receives Urban Mass Transit Administration Administrator’s Award for Excellence in Providing Rural Public Transportation; recognized in DOT’s Best Practices in Specialized and Human Service Transportation Coordination.
1994
Jaunt receives the National Community Transportation of the Year Award from the Community Transit Association of America.
1999
Jaunt wins the Outstanding Public Transportation System Award for non-urbanized areas from the Virginia Transit Association.
2005
Jaunt Celebrates 30 years and 5 millionth passenger trip; new two-story building completed.
2009
Jaunt awarded Outstanding Public Transportation Marketing Award for “smaller systems” from the Virginia Transit Association for its branding overhaul in 2008 and “Ride with a Star” associated campaign.
2015
Jaunt celebrates 40 years of dedicated service to central Virginia.
2016
Jaunt establishes “29 Express” commuter route, to eventually become CONNECT and expand to serve Crozet, Buckingham, and Lovingston.
2020
COVID-19 upends everything. Jaunt undergoes rebrand and assumes operation of Greene County Transit.
2021
Jaunt launches new website; welcomes Ted Rieck as CEO.
