For the past 12 years, Earnest Gaines has been doing more than driving a bus. He’s helping people stay connected to their healthcare, their jobs, and their communities.
What Earnest enjoys most about being a Jaunt operator isn’t the driving. It’s the people.
“I love helping people,” he says. “I enjoy the conversations we have and getting to know people.”
That commitment to service is what drew him to Jaunt in the first place. After hearing from a friend who worked at Jaunt, Earnest applied and quickly discovered something special.
“It’s not a job,” he says. “I really enjoy helping people.”
Over the years, he’s met countless riders whose determination and resilience have left a lasting impression.
One rider he remembers had been living with severe pain before receiving hip and knee replacements. After the procedures, the rider shared how life-changing the experience had been and how grateful he was to finally have relief.
Another rider who inspired Earnest was a woman recovering from surgery who refused to let her challenges slow her down. Despite using crutches and facing physical obstacles, she remained determined and independent.
“Sometimes you have a bad day,” Earnest says. “Then you see people like that and realize things aren’t so bad. They’re an inspiration.”
Earnest has also seen firsthand how transportation can change lives. He recalls riders who moved to the area specifically because Jaunt’s services made it possible for them to get to work, appointments, and other important destinations.
“Jaunt makes a big difference,” he says.
When he’s not behind the wheel, Earnest enjoys spending time outdoors, fishing, relaxing by the pool during the summer, and making memories with his grandchildren.
After 12 years, his favorite part of the job remains simple:
“I love driving for Jaunt because I love helping people.”
Thank you, Earnest, for the care, compassion, and dedication you bring to our community every day.
